Point-of-Load Modules for Video Transcoders
A Point of Load (PoL) Module converts DC voltages to lower levels and allows for DC/DC conversion where it is needed, in a distributed fashion, versus a centralized-and-routed power delivery method which is harder to regulate. Also referred to as Point of Use (PoU) modules, they are a popular solution for circuits that require voltages lower than 3.3V. Power efficiency is accomplished in part by lower (processor) core voltages (0.9 - 1.1V). But signals at such low voltages provide less headroom to work with, forcing greater accuracy, and less tolerance to noise. Additionally, the lower voltage is not necessarily coupled with low current draw. The PoL module converts a higher incoming voltage to several levels of output voltage where it is needed. The PoL is capable of supporting high currents, and can be located near to the point where the circuit consumes the most DC power. A PoL module reduces design issues with voltage regulation, the introduction of noise, and parasitic capacitance that would result from long traces at low voltages with high current draw.
